Lotus Elise 160, 1996

The design philosophy of Lotus is "Performance through light weight", a philosophy first adopted by the founder of Lotus, Colin Chapman. The motto drives Lotus to obtain very high performance with lightweight cars in spite of their relatively modest power outputs, with a strong emphasis on driving purity and dynamics.

The result is a sports car that in production form in 1996 weighed in at just 720 kg (1,587 lb). Compare this to a Porsche Boxster which is also considered to be an extremely lightweight sports car but weighs nearly twice as much: 1,250 kg (2,756 lb).

The Lotus Elise's acceleration (0-60mph in 5.8 seconds), braking, cornering, and fuel consumption (all of which are improved by reductions in a car's weight) were astonishing for an engine put out a relatively modest 120 bhp (89 kW), compared to the 201 bhp (149 kW) produced by the 1997 Porsche Boxster.

Though high-tech, it represented affordable cost of ownership for sports car lovers on a budget who still wanted performance and looks.

Besides the "standard" higher-performance variants listed below, Lotus also released some limited edition models such as Sport 135 (1998/9) with approx 145 bhp (108 kW), Sport 160 (2000) with 150-160 bhp (112-119 kW) and Sport 190 (190 bhp / 142 kW). These were more competent on track with sports suspension, wheels and tyres, seats according to model. There were other special editions which were basically cosmetic treatments such as the 50th Anniversary Edition (green/gold) celebrating 50 years of Lotus cars, the Type 49 ("Gold Leaf" red and white two-tone), and Type 72 ("JPS" black/gold) to recall their successful Grand Prix car type numbers.

Rinspeed Yello Talbo Concept, 1996

Concepted as a symbiosis between nostalgic and futuristic elements, the unusual appearance, based on the traditional design of a Talbot-Lago 150 SS by „Figoni & Falaschi" of 1938, shows off in a pastel yellow color. This in a play of words and colors about the partner „Yello" - one of the world's most renown music groups.

The interior is decorated with precious fabrics of „En Soie". The fiber-optics controlled „ODR"-stereo system of „Pioneer" is unsurpassed in its quality. A „Crash" watch - made from recycled aluminum material - can be easily switched from the wrist of the driver to the horn button by a simple twist - and, of course, vice versa.

The supercharged V8-engine - coupled to an automatic gearbox - with a 5.0 liter displacement and an output of 320 HP enables the RINSPEED YELLO TALBO to breathtaking acceleration figures (5.5 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h). The suspension was concepted by „Eibach" and the ultra-wide Dunlop tires (265/35 ZR 20 - SP 8000) are mounted on chromed BBS RS-II wheels (9x20") and guarantee an optimal handling.

Daihatsu Charade, 1996

The fourth generation Daihatsu Charade was introduced in 1994, again with hatchback and sedan bodies. A 1.0 L engine was the base model in Japan, but in many European countries, the SOHC 1.3 L was used. The sedan, introduced in 1994, featured a 1.5 L engine with optional 4WD. The Diesel models were dropped in all markets where they were previously available.

The turbocharged GTti version was replaced by a more conventional GTi with an SOHC 16-valve 1.6 L engine. This version was engineered by Italian ex-racing driver De Tomaso (the previous owner of Innocenti), including racing-derived camshafts, and was capable of 124 hp JIS (91 kW) in the Japanese market. The export version was detuned to 105 hp DIN (77 kW). De Tomaso also added their own bodykit, Recaro seats, a Nardi Torino steering wheel, and Pirelli sports tyres. A total of 120,000 Daihatsu Charade GTi were produced following this joint effort.

The Daihatsu Charade was restyled in 1996, only two years after release (with the codename G203). It had a 'smiley face' grille and changed headlights, looking more like its Toyota sibling the Starlet. It was produced until 2000, when it was replaced by the Sirion/Storia.
